We would suggest answer A. If they said they think they had picked up a stomach bug and are being sick, then you may want to request they go to their GP and get a medical certificate. This would be at your cost. If they do not attend work, ask that they update you later in the day about how they are feeling, and whether they think they can attend tomorrow.
Depending on all of the circumstances, you may alternatively consider initiating a disciplinary investigation regarding the reason for the absence e.g. if you try to call them and they don’t answer but then return to work on 28 or 29 December, where you’ve spoken previously about the reasons for sick leave.
We suggest that you require staff to telephone if they need to advise that they are away sick, instead of accepting a text message – then you can find out more details.
