Cherie Elsegood was employed by her cousin, Nikki Connors, Principal for Propellor Property Investments Limited (Propellor) in 2014, where she worked for 3 years, initially as a contractor and then as an employee. Ms Connors said that Ms Elsegood was generously remunerated, including that she was gifted a VW car. Ms Elsegood was also offered the use of an apartment free of charge for the first two years, and the rent was then subsidised for the rest of her employment. She shared the apartment with her cousin, Ms Connors. Ms Elsegood was allowed to offset business expenses she incurred each month against the rent for the apartment.

The Protected Disclosures Act (known as the Whistleblowers Act), is to be reviewed by the Labour-led government. State Service Minister Chris Hipkins has said "It is crucial that employees feel safe to report cases of serious misconduct.” This review affects both the private and public sector.
