We encourage you to update your employment agreements immediately as last years amendments to the Employment Relations Act are due to come into force for existing employees very soon. The new requirements, which relate to working hours, cancellation of shifts and restrictions on secondary employment, will apply from 1 April, 2017. The wording of some clauses in your current employment agreements may become ineffective from this date.

The final reading of the Employment Relations Amendment Bill is occurring as we go to print. The government did not have the numbers in the last term to make the legislation changes with United Future and the Maori Party opposing the reforms. No such problem this time around.

The Holidays Amendment Bill to “Mondayise” Waitangi day and ANZAC day has now been passed into legislation. If either of those days fall on a Saturday or Sunday, which is not otherwise a working day for the employee, then the public holiday will be treated as falling on the following Monday.
