In December 2013 Balance Agri-Nutrients Ltd dismissed an employee (Shaun O’Connor) following a low-level positive test for cannabis. This followed the company receiving a complaint from a member of the public stating that two of their employees were smoking marijuana in a car (during the employees’ lunch break) in a shopping centre car park.

Mohammed Sahim, a Cargo Handler at Menzies International, was dismissed after driving a golf cart into a pile of stacked pallets. He was driving the cart from the passenger side of the vehicle and accidently pushed the accelerator instead of the brake.

Despite Turei Peters being too drunk to attend work following a Boxing Day drinking binge, his dismissal was deemed to be unjustified by the Employment Relations Authority (ERA). Mr Peters, a Knifehand Cutter, had texted his employer Bay Packers (NZ) Ltd saying “Apologies ray 2 crook to make it in. Turei”. The next day he explained he had been drinking until 3am and was therefore too drunk to come to work for the start of his 5am shift.
